Today, we are making a nuggets recipe, because, let’s be honest… kids love nuggets! We often start by offering them simple chicken nuggets (like these :)), but this time I thought it would be great to make fish nuggets for baby, and even sneak in some vegetables. Both are often rejected by children, so I tried to come up with a fun recipe that is easy to eat and a little bit of a disguise: IT WAS A HUGE HIT WITH ALIX!
How can you help a child enjoy fish?
Fish, as we know, fish can have a fairly strong, powerful flavor. We try to offer fish quite often as soon as animal proteins can be introduced into baby’s diet, while of course varying the types of protein.
There are also many different ways to serve it to a child: as a purée, brandade-style, as patties, as little balls… all those small finger foods children love eating with their hands. So I wanted to make fish nuggets for Alix! Alix likes fish, but it is not her favorite food. I wanted to show her that it can be prepared in different ways, and that she might even love it. And it worked!!!
Baby fish nuggets recipe
In this nuggets recipe for babies and toddlers: no milk and no egg. First, we will cook sweet potato with red onion. Sweet potato lives up to its name and perfectly balances the flavor of the fish. The red onion adds a really lovely flavor to the mixture! Then, a little chives for freshness.
Finally, the coating for our nuggets will be only bread, slightly dry and blended very finely. NOTHING ELSE!
Here is what we need to make this baby fish and sweet potato nuggets recipe (from 10 months, makes about 12 small nuggets –> divide into 3 meals, or 2 meals from 18 months):
Ingredients
How to make these fish nuggets for baby?

Start by washing and peeling the sweet potato. Then cut it into small cubes so they steam faster than larger pieces.

Now for the red onion. Remove the skin, then use about 1 tablespoon of slices (10 g).

Place the sweet potato pieces and red onion in the steamer basket and steam for 7 minutes.
Meanwhile, prepare the bread crumbs by blending the bread very finely in a small food processor. Set aside, or use ready-made breadcrumbs.

Wash the chives and finely chop them.
Once the vegetables are cooked, let them cool gently.
Then, once the vegetables are at room temperature, place them in a clean, dry food processor and add the raw cod. Be careful not to blend at full power. The goal is to get a nice filling.
Once everything is well combined, transfer it to a small bowl, add the chives, and mix this time with a spatula or fork.

Now shape the little nuggets. I recommend making them quite small and not too thick, otherwise they will break very easily and baby will not be able to eat them with their fingers… well, technically they can, but they will get it everywhere!
The ideal size is about 1 1/2 x 3/4 inches (4 cm x 2 cm), and no more than 1/4 inch thick (7 mm) — so technical, right… haha! Now you know everything 😉
Shape the little nuggets with your hands so they are firm enough, then coat them with the breadcrumbs prepared earlier. Try to cover them really well all over!

Cooking
Our little baby fish nuggets already look adorable… but they still need to be cooked 😉 I cooked them in a skillet with olive oil (I am an olive oil fan, what can I say…). Heat the olive oil for a few moments over medium heat in the skillet, then add the nuggets.
Cooking time: 4 minutes on each side over medium heat! Gently flip them with a spatula halfway through cooking.
Once cooked, place them on paper towels and let them cool for a few moments: first, we do not want baby to burn themselves, and second, this will help the nuggets hold together better!
Our baby fish nuggets recipe (from 10 months) is now ready, and baby can enjoy it! For your information, you can freeze this preparation without any problem: lightly pre-cook the nuggets, let them cool, and into the freezer they go! Finish cooking them when you defrost them 😉 Serve with a nice purée — delicious.
