Today, we are making a hearty dish: baby shepherd’s pie. Clearly, the temperatures have completely dropped! It is not exactly fun, but we can comfort ourselves with the idea that we can eat more filling dishes to keep us going all day 😉 And the same goes for baby!
So here it is: this baby shepherd’s pie recipe just had to be posted quickly!
Baby shepherd’s pie
First of all, what is hachis parmentier? It is a French-style shepherd’s pie made mainly with potatoes and ground meat. The word “hachis” refers to minced or chopped ingredients, which is perfect because today, this version is for baby!
During the first year of food diversification (and even now, actually), I avoided giving my daughter plain potato purée too often. I find it a little heavy, and I prefer adding another vegetable.
So today, I decided to share a baby shepherd’s pie recipe from 10 months, made with carrot!
We know that babies love carrots (they are usually one of the first vegetables introduced during food diversification). Carrots are full of vitamins and minerals, and they pair perfectly with potato, so that works out beautifully.
We will add ground beef (you can also choose chicken, turkey, or veal!). A little minced onion adds extra flavor to the ground meat. In short, it is a treat for baby’s taste buds and a great way to continue developing baby’s palate during food diversification.
Here is what you need to make this carrot baby shepherd’s pie recipe (from 10 months, for one serving of about 6.7 oz / 190 g):
Ingredients
Preparing baby shepherd’s pie

We will start with the potato. Wash it, peel it, and cut it into fairly thin slices. (Choose potatoes that are suitable for purées so you do not end up with a sticky purée).

Place the potato slices in the steamer basket.
Now move on to the carrot. Wash it, peel it, and cut it into slices about 1/4 inch (5 mm) thick.

Cooking
Place the carrot slices in the steamer basket with the potato, then start cooking. Steam for 15 minutes! The vegetables should be very tender.

While the vegetables are cooking, prepare the other ingredients.
Weigh out 1/2 oz ground meat (15 g), then finely mince 1 teaspoon onion (5 g).

When the vegetables are cooked, take a few cooked carrot slices (about 10 g) and cut them into very small dice.

Heat 1 teaspoon sunflower oil in a pan. Once hot, add the minced onion over low to medium heat, making sure it turns lightly golden but not too much.

Then add the ground meat to the onions and continue cooking for about 2 minutes, stirring regularly so it cooks evenly.

Finally, add the diced carrot and let everything finish cooking gently for 1 minute.

Set the meat aside off the heat. Mash the potato and carrot slices with a potato masher or fork, adding cooking water as needed. The goal is for the purée not to be too heavy or too thick, so it is easy for baby to eat and swallow. You can also blend it directly in a small blender.
Place the meat in a small oven-safe ramekin, add the purée on top, then sprinkle with grated Gruyère. I blended the Gruyère first so there would be no little strands, which are not ideal for baby to eat, then sprinkled it over the purée. → No grated Gruyère for babies with cow’s milk protein allergy.
Place under the oven broiler for a few minutes, watching carefully. The Gruyère should be golden, but no more.
I want to point out that this purée still contains small pieces, as you may have noticed: tender diced carrot, ground meat, finely minced onion, and so on. It is best to adapt the texture to your baby. If baby does not chew yet, blend everything together; it will make a very flavorful blended shepherd’s pie. If baby can chew, the texture is fine, but always serve it under supervision. 😉
And there you have it, our baby shepherd’s pie with carrot recipe is finished, and baby can enjoy it!
Enjoy your meal, baby!
Storage
Once your baby shepherd’s pie is finished, let it cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes if you want to store it and serve it to baby later.
- Refrigerator: You can store this baby shepherd’s pie in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
- Freezer: Si vous souhaitez conserver ce hachis parmentier plus longtemps, vous pouvez le congeler. Placez le hachis dans un tupperware adapté à la congélation. Il pourra être conservé pendant 2 mois!
Tip: When thawing, place the shepherd’s pie in the refrigerator the night before, or gently reheat it in a saucepan using a water bath for smooth, even reheating.
