Recipe steps
Today we’re cooking green lentils for baby!
These tiny legumes are packed with protein, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, making them a wonderful, healthy addition to your baby’s diet.
Since lentils are already rich in protein, there’s no need to combine them with meat, fish, or egg. They provide just the right amount of protein on their own, perfect for a baby-friendly meal.
We’re pairing the lentils with carrots, a baby’s favorite veggie!
Carrots are full of vitamins, help brighten baby’s complexion, and can even help soothe digestive discomfort like colic.
(Note: WHO guidelines currently recommend introducing lentils from 15 months, but we’ve personally had no issues offering small quantities earlier, always well-blended and mixed with other vegetables.)
Here’s what you’ll need to make this smooth purée of green lentils, carrots, and onion for baby
From 8 months, this recipe makes 3 portions of about 200g (7 oz) each:
Ingredients
- 300 g (10.6 oz) carrot (about 3 large carrots, peeled)
- 70 g (2.5 oz) green lentils
- 75 g (2.65 oz) small onion (peeled)
- 3 teaspoons canola oil
Preparation

I chose organic green lentils.
Cooking them is very simple: place the green lentils in three times their volume of cold water.
Once the water comes to a boil, cook for 25 minutes. Let’s go!

Wash, peel, and slice them into rounds (I ended up with 300 g / 10.6 oz of carrot slices).
Place the carrot slices into the steamer basket.

Peel it and cut it into several pieces.
Add the onion pieces to the steamer basket along with the carrots.
Cooking
Time for the steaming! Steam the carrots and onion for about 12 minutes.
Once all the cooking is done, transfer the carrots, onion, drained green lentils, and canola oil into a blender.
Blend until you get a nice textured purée (from 8 months, it’s good to start offering slightly more texture like a coarse purée).
I added a little of the cooking water from the carrots and onion to lighten the texture.
And there you have it, your Green lentil, carrot, and onion purée is ready, and baby is going to love it!
Bon appétit, little one! 🙂

Hi! Just made this recipe – it’s great! I tripled it and added the juice of half a lemon to give it a little extra flavor. So glad I found your blog! I read Bringing Up Bebe (about an American mother raising her kids in France) and am always looking for yummy food to feed my baby. Can’t wait to try some of your other recipes! (Your English is fantastic by the way!)
