Recipe steps
Today, we’re making a super easy finger food recipe, perfect for baby-led weaning (BLW): mini carrot and ham flans!
These homemade baby flans are soft, colorful, and full of flavor, and baby can enjoy them on their own (always under adult supervision, of course!). Carrot and ham make a delicious combo, and the texture is just right for little ones learning to chew: easy to hold, soft to bite, and gentle on tiny gums.
Here’s what you need to make these mini carrot and ham flans for baby (from 10 months old):
Ingredients
Pour 9 mini flans :
- 1.6 oz peeled carrot (sliced, about 45g)
- 0.9 oz cooked ham (25g)
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp (0.5 fl oz) heavy cream (or soy milk for dairy-free option)
- 1 level tbsp all-purpose flour (about 0.3 oz)
Instructions
- Slice the carrots into thin rounds and steam them for about 10 minutes, until they’re very tender.
- In the meantime, finely chop the ham into tiny baby-friendly pieces. You can also blend it for an even smoother texture. Try to choose low-sodium, nitrate-free cooked ham whenever possible.
- In a mixing bowl, crack the eggs and add the heavy cream (or soy milk for dairy-free babies). Whisk until well combined.
- Add the flour and mix well to avoid any lumps.
- Then, stir in the chopped ham.
- Once the carrots are cooked, dice them into very small pieces and add them to the flan mixture.
Baking
- Pour the mixture into small molds (I use cube-shaped molds from Silikomart, they’re just perfect for this kind of recipe!). Silicone molds work best for easy unmolding, but if you’re using something else, don’t forget to lightly grease them with oil or butter.
Make sure not to fill the molds all the way to the top to avoid overflow during baking. - Bake at 340°F (170°C) for 18 to 20 minutes, until the flans are set and lightly golden.
Let them cool for a few minutes before unmolding, and always check the temperature before serving to your baby.
And that’s it! Your carrot and ham mini flans are ready to be enjoyed as finger food! Perfectly soft, colorful, and easy to hold, your little one is going to love them!
Bon appétit, baby!
Storage
- In the fridge: Store the mini flans in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before serving so they’re warm and soft.
- In the freezer: You can freeze them in a zip-top bag or airtight container for up to 1 month. Defrost in the fridge overnight, then warm up slightly before giving them to your baby.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I substitute the carrots with another vegetable?
Yes, absolutely! You can replace the carrots with zucchini, green peas, pumpkin, broccoli… whatever your baby enjoys or whatever you have on hand.
Can I leave out the ham in this recipe?
Definitely! If you’d prefer a vegetarian version, just skip the ham, the flans will still hold together nicely and provide a good source of protein thanks to the eggs.
Can I make these flans without eggs?
Eggs help bind the ingredients and make the flans soft and fluffy. If you need an egg-free version, you can try replacing them with 1 tablespoon of chickpea flour or cornstarch mixed with a little water. I haven’t tested this variation yet, let me know if you do! 🙂
How can I serve the flans as a complete meal?
Serve these mini flans with a side of veggie purée or soft, steamed vegetable chunks for a balanced, baby-friendly meal.
