Mild and very well tolerated, zucchini is often one of the first vegetables offered when starting solids.
Its tender flesh makes it easy to get a perfectly smooth texture without added salt or thickener, and its neutral flavor pairs easily with other foods. This makes it an ideal first purée base to gradually introduce baby to vegetable flavors in general.
When to start zucchini and which texture to offer
With your baby’s pediatrician’s approval, introduction can begin from 4 months in very small amounts, as a smooth and even purée made with a blender.
Between 6 and 8 months, the purée can become slightly thicker or be finely mashed with a fork and mixed with potato.
Around 8–10 months, move on to a mash with very small, soft pieces, still well cooked, then to very tender diced zucchini mixed with a starch after 10–12 months, always following your child’s pace and watching for signs of tiredness or refusal.
Ingredients for 3 portions
- about 1 2/3 cups diced zucchini (250 g)
- Optional: 1 teaspoon oil, canola or olive, to provide quality fats
Step-by-step recipe
- Prepare the zucchini. Wash it carefully, peel it if the skin is thick, then remove any large seeds if they have already formed to avoid a stringy texture.
- Cut into cubes or slices. Evenly sized pieces will cook uniformly and help limit excess water.
- Cook until very tender.
- Steam: 7 minutes.
- Blend finely. Place the well-drained zucchini in the blender bowl and blend thoroughly until you get a very smooth purée. Adjust with a little cooking water if needed; the texture should coat the spoon but not be too runny.
- Add 1 teaspoon oil, canola or olive, just before serving.
- Serve warm. Do not add salt; let your child discover zucchini’s natural flavor.

Texture by age
- 4–6 months: smooth, no pieces.
- 6–8 months: thick smooth purée or finely mashed.
- 8–10 months: mashed, with small soft pieces.
- 10–12 months: very tender cubes mixed with a starch.
Portion guidelines
- When starting out, 2 to 3 spoonfuls are enough to get used to the new food.
- Around 6–8 months, the general target is about 3 to 4 tablespoons (40 to 60 g), depending on appetite and alongside other foods.
- Then about 1/4 to 1/3 cup (60 to 90 g) alongside other foods between 9 and 12 months.
These portions are only guidelines: adapt to each baby’s hunger, pace, and tolerance.

Benefits of zucchini
Zucchini is a very hydrating and mild vegetable, especially useful when starting solids because it blends smoothly and is well tolerated by most babies. It provides nutrients and is an ideal base for varying flavors.
- Hydration : It contains a lot of water—93%. Helpful in hot weather to keep baby well hydrated.
- Fiber : It helps support digestion when the zucchini is ripe and well cooked.
- Potassium: contributes to proper muscle and brain function.
- Vitamins C and B9: support immunity and cell growth.
- Carotenoids: found mostly in the skin. When the texture allows, blending with thin skin increases antioxidant intake.
- Neutral flavor: makes it easy to pair with starches, poultry, white fish, and aromatic herbs.
FAQ
Should zucchini be peeled?
It is not required when the skin is thin. If it is thick, it is better to peel it to keep the texture smooth and pleasant.
Raw or cooked zucchini at the beginning?
Always start with cooked zucchini that is well blended.
Can I add salt or season the purée?
Do not add salt to baby food; after 6 months, small amounts of mild herbs can add flavor without masking the vegetable’s taste. Avoid salt before 12 months.
