Recipe steps
And you, when do you plan to introduce citrus fruits into your baby’s diet?
If your baby is over 6 months old, let’s go! Now’s a great time to start.
I wanted to add a little hint of acidity to my baby’s fruit purées to help her discover new flavors. Grapefruit was my first choice. I love grapefruit, so I was curious to see if the saying “like mother, like daughter” would apply here too!
The taste will stay subtle, but grapefruit will bring just enough tang to awaken baby’s palate, and surprise her a little!
The pear brings natural sweetness to the purée. Banana adds smoothness. And the grapefruit? A touch of acidity and a great boost of vitamin C.
A perfect fruity trio!
Here’s what you need to make this pear, banana & grapefruit purée for baby (from 6 months):
Ingredients
- 1 pink grapefruit
- 1 pear (I used a Guyot variety)
- 1 banana
Preparation
Let’s start with the pear.
Wash it well and trim off the ends. Cut it in half, then remove the core with the seeds. Try to take out any tough little fibers if there are any.
Then, cut the pear into small cubes.
Cooking
Place the pear cubes into your steamer basket and steam for about 10 minutes.
If you’re using a Cookeo or pressure cooker, cook under pressure for 6 minutes.
While the pear is cooking, peel the banana and slice it into rounds.
Set the slices aside for now, we’ll add them to the pear later on.
Now for our touch of acidity: the grapefruit.
Cut it in half and squeeze it to get about 50 ml of juice (about 1.7 fl oz).
Make sure there are no pulp bits left in the juice, you can strain it if needed using a fine sieve.
Set the juice aside.
Once the 10 minutes of pear cooking time are up, add the banana slices to the steamer basket.
(Be careful not to burn yourself with the steam!)
Let them sit and steam for another 2 minutes.
With the Cookeo, I didn’t start a new cooking cycle, I just added the banana and closed the lid again.
Next, place the cooked fruits in your blender, then pour in the grapefruit juice.
Blend until smooth!
You’ll notice the purée is a bit runny at first, it will thicken slightly after a few hours in the fridge.
Bon appétit, baby!
