Today we’re making a slightly special carrot and potato mash, because we’re adding flavors we absolutely love here: Italian flavors!
This mash has a lightly sweet taste thanks to the carrot, which babies usually love, and the addition of tomatoes and fresh basil brings a refreshing touch that is perfect during the summer season.
If we had to choose one aromatic herb out of all the ones that exist, it would definitely be basil 🙂 we add it to so many of our dishes! Of course, you can vary the herbs according to your tastes, so feel free to adapt the recipes however you like!
For the tomatoes, I chose cocktail tomatoes, but cherry tomatoes or any other type of tomato you have on hand will work just as well. Choose a variety with plenty of flesh, or a nicely fruity one, to make it even more appealing to baby ;).
You can even add a little cheese! A few pieces of mozzarella are delicious!
Here is what you need to make this Italian-style carrot and potato mash recipe for baby (from 8 months, makes 3 portions, or a side dish for 2 adults and 2 children):
Ingredients
Preparation
Start by washing the potatoes, peeling them, then slicing them very thinly.

Do the same with the carrots. Thin slices are important because they will make the vegetables easier to mash after cooking.

Cooking
Steam for 18 minutes.

In the meantime, wash the tomatoes, then cut them into very small pieces.

Prepare the fresh basil: wash it, then finely chop it.

Once the vegetables are cooked, place them in a mixing bowl with the milk or cooking water and the butter (add the liquid according to the desired consistency, little by little as needed!).

Mash with a potato masher, or with a fork if you do not have one. Mash it well and avoid leaving large pieces of vegetables. On that note, if baby does not yet accept this type of texture or pieces, blend it until smooth to turn this mash into a puree that will be easier for baby to eat!
Once the vegetables are nicely mashed, add the tomato pieces with the finely chopped fresh basil and mix everything together.

Our Italian-style carrot and potato mash for baby (from 8 months) is already done!
This is a dish we love making at home because it is a nice change from a simple (although delicious) potato puree 😉 It is also easier to digest.
Enjoy!
