Today, we’re making cereal bars for babies. These homemade cereal bars are truly the perfect option when you want a simple, energy-packed, and easy-to-carry snack.
Here, there’s no need for sugar: the banana and applesauce naturally provide sweetness while helping bind the mixture together. The oats create a wonderfully filling texture (perfect for breakfast), and the peanut butter adds healthy fats… while making everything extra delicious!
Plus, this recipe is dairy-free (no cow’s milk protein), making it perfect for babies with intolerances or allergies.
The result: soft bars that hold together well once cooled, and that you can easily pack into a container for the park, the car, daycare, or rushed mornings!
Quick allergen note: Peanut butter is an allergen. If peanuts haven’t been introduced yet, introduce them gradually (small amount at first) and monitor carefully. Peanut butter can also be replaced with almond butter, hazelnut butter… which are also allergens but generally less common.

How to Make the Cereal Bars
Mash the banana
On a plate, mash the banana with a fork until smooth.

Lightly blend the oats
The idea is not to turn them into flour: you just want to break them down slightly so the bars hold together better and are easier for baby to eat.

Mix all the ingredients
In a mixing bowl, add the mashed banana, applesauce, peanut butter, and blended oats.
Mix until you get a smooth dough.
Then add, if desired, chocolate chips or finely chopped dried fruit… (Personally, I only pressed a few chocolate chips into half of the mixture once it was spread out).

Spread and press down
Spread the mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in a square (or rectangle) shape.
Press down firmly with the back of a spoon: this helps prevent the bars from crumbling when sliced.

Baking
Bake for 13 to 15 minutes at 350°F (180°C).
The edges should be lightly golden while the bars stay soft in the center. Adjust baking time depending on your oven.
Cooling and slicing
Let cool completely (this is important).
Then cut into rectangular bars.

Enjoy, baby!
Practical Tips for Perfect Cereal Bars
- Ideal thickness: about 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1 to 1.5 cm). Too thin = dry, too thick = less cooked in the center.
- Cleaner slices: wait until fully cooled, or even chill for 30 minutes in the refrigerator before cutting.
- For babies, you can also cut them into small sticks (easy finger food format).
Storage
- In the refrigerator: keep for 4–5 days in an airtight container (they stay soft).
- Freezing: possible in portions (thaw overnight in the refrigerator).
FAQ
At what age can babies eat these bars?
These bars are suitable from 10 months if baby is already comfortable with finger foods (soft pieces they can hold and chew). If baby is just starting with textured foods, cut them into small sticks and serve under supervision.
Are these cereal bars really sugar-free?
Yes, there is no added sugar. The sweetness comes only from the banana and the unsweetened applesauce.
Are the bars soft or crunchy?
They are mostly soft and chewy. If you want them a little more baked/crispy, spread the mixture thinner and bake for an additional 2 to 3 minutes while watching closely.
Why lightly blend the oats?
To improve the texture: it helps the bars hold together better and makes them easier for baby to eat, without turning them into flour.
Why are the bars crumbling?
Most often:
The mixture was not pressed down firmly enough before baking
They were cut too early (wait until fully cooled)
The banana was not ripe enough (it binds less)
Tip: once baked, let cool then chill for 30 minutes in the refrigerator before slicing.
The bars are too soft, how can I fix that?
Spread the mixture a little thinner (max 1 cm / 1/2 inch)
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons oats (or blend them a bit more)
Bake an additional 2 to 4 minutes (depending on your oven)
Can peanut butter be replaced?
Yes, with almond butter, hazelnut butter, cashew butter…
Or even tahini (sesame paste) if baby already tolerates sesame.
The goal is to use a “fatty” ingredient that binds and adds flavor.
How can I transport them easily?
In a small container (or paper bag), and if you want to prevent sticking: place a small sheet of parchment paper between the bars.
What if baby has never tried peanuts?
If peanuts haven’t been introduced yet, it’s best to start with a very tiny amount, then gradually increase over the following days. (Avoid testing a new allergen when baby is sick.)
