We want a Halloween snack that makes baby smile, not scared! Well, actually, this baby porridge with banana and rolled oats, shaped like a little brain, is pretty spooky 😀
Porridge is a soft cereal-based dish (oats here), often made with water, but for this recipe I chose milk, with the perfect texture for babies.
This Halloween porridge is gentle, naturally sweet thanks to the banana, ready in 10 minutes, and perfect as a baby snack or baby breakfast. You can shape it into a funny little “brain” and add a drizzle of smooth red berry coulis (I used frozen raspberries to mimic blood) for the Halloween effect. No added sugar, a soft melt-in-the-mouth texture, and everyday ingredients.
Ingredients
For 1 bowl (one small brain ;))
Porridge preparation
Warm the milk over low heat for 2 minutes.
Add the rolled oats. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring, until the texture is creamy and the grains are very tender and nicely swollen.
Off the heat, let it rest for 2 minutes. Add the mashed banana and mix until smooth and even.
Halloween version: shape it into a small dome and draw grooves with the back of a spoon, a knife, or a chopstick… whatever you have on hand!
Optional “blood” coulis: warm the red berries, mash them, then pass through a fine-mesh sieve. If you need to thicken it, return it to low heat for 30 seconds. Drizzle it into the grooves.
Serve warm, or cover and chill for 30 minutes to 1 hour if baby prefers a thicker texture.
Happy Halloween!
Tips
- Too runny? Cook for 1 to 2 extra minutes uncovered, or add 1 tablespoon rolled oats and cook for 1 minute.
- Too thick? Loosen with 1 to 2 tablespoons warm milk.
- For a whiter look (the “brain” effect): add 1 tablespoon yogurt after cooking.
FAQ
From what age?
From 6/8 months if the texture is very soft and it is served with a spoon.
Can I use breast milk or infant formula?
Yes, but do not boil it, so it keeps its properties.
Should I sweeten this porridge?
The banana is more than enough to sweeten this recipe naturally—you’ll see!
How should I store this Halloween porridge?
In an airtight container, for 24 hours in the refrigerator. I do not recommend freezing it!
