Recipe steps
Brussels sprouts… did you like them as a kid?
Personally, I really didn’t, not one bit! But over time, I’ve grown to really enjoy them.
They’re so good for our health that I truly think they deserve more love, a little green in this wild world can only help. 🙂
Babies need nutrients, vitamins, and protein, and Brussels sprouts have all of that to offer!
So let’s share the goodness with our little one by making a baby-friendly recipe.
To soften the strong taste of Brussels sprouts, we’re going to pair them with some potato.
Ham goes really well with sprouts (and bacon goes even better, but let’s save that one for later ;)).
A little onion adds just the right amount of kick to this recipe. Perfect! Our ingredient list is ready, let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need to make this baby recipe:
(This recipe makes about 450 g (15.9 oz) of purée)
Ingredients
- 225 g (7.9 oz) Brussels sprouts, peeled (about 12 sprouts)
- 160 g (5.6 oz) potato
- 20 g (0.7 oz) onion
- 35 g (1.2 oz) ham
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
Preparation
Let’s start with the Brussels sprouts.
We’re going to boil some water in a saucepan to blanch them, this helps make them easier for baby to digest.
First, wash the sprouts, trim the base, and remove the outer leaves if they’re damaged.
Cooking
Once the water is boiling, add the Brussels sprouts and blanch them for 5 minutes over high heat.
This helps make them easier to digest for baby.
While they’re blanching, let’s prepare the potato.
Wash it, peel it, and slice it thinly so it cooks faster.
Now prepare the onion, measure out about 20 g (0.7 oz) and chop it into small pieces.
We’ll start cooking the potato and onion.
With a pressure cooker (like a Cookeo), I cooked them for 6 minutes under pressure.
If using a steamer, count about 8 minutes. Let’s go!
Once your Brussels sprouts are blanched, drain them using a colander.
Then place them in the steamer basket and cook again.
With the Cookeo: 4 more minutes under pressure.
With a regular steamer: about 6 minutes. Done!
Cut the ham into small pieces and blend it separately, this will give the purée a bit more texture.
Set the blended ham aside.
Now place all the cooked vegetables in a blender, add the olive oil and a bit of cooking water to reach a smooth purée consistency. Blend well.
Pour the purée into baby’s bowl and mix in the ham. And that’s it! 🙂
Our Brussels sprouts, potato & ham purée for babies (From 8 months) is now ready — and baby is going to love it.
Bon appétit, little one!
