Today we’re making an apple and prune compote for baby that’s full of benefits, gentle, naturally sweet, and especially helpful for supporting baby’s digestion.
It’s one of the recipes I love offering when baby is starting solids and has tummy discomfort linked to constipation: simple, comforting, and effective.
Yes, we all know that prunes are a great ally during bouts of constipation. And they can absolutely be used in baby recipes. Naturally rich in fiber, prunes help gently regulate intestinal transit without irritating baby’s still-delicate digestive system. They also contain a natural sugar (sorbitol) that draws water into the intestines and helps with elimination, making prunes a real little natural anti-constipation remedy. Plus, they provide essential minerals like iron, potassium, and magnesium… in short, all good things for baby’s growth!
Paired with apple, one of the very first fruits introduced at the start of solid foods, this compote is perfectly balanced: the apple’s light sweetness softens the richness of the prune. The result? A smooth texture, a naturally sweet flavor, and a compote baby will love!
Ingredients (1 baby portion of about 4 oz / 110 g)
- 1 Golden Delicious apple
- 1 1/2 pitted prunes
- Optional from 6 months: a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla
Preparation
Peel, core, and cut the apple into pieces, and pit the prunes if they are not already pitted.
Steam cooking
Steam the diced apple and prunes for 10 to 12 minutes, until everything is very soft.
Blending
Blend the apple and prunes until you get a very smooth, even consistency. If needed, add a little cooking water for an even silkier texture.
Serve warm or cold.
Why offer prunes to baby?
From 4 months, baby can have prunes in very small amounts, finely blended into a compote or purée. Prunes are especially recommended in cases of occasional constipation, which unfortunately happens often at the beginning of starting solids.
They are a natural alternative to medication, as long as they are introduced gradually and always with a texture suited to baby’s age.
As prevention, you can offer them once a week, paired with gentle fruits like apple, pear, or peach.
Storage
- 48 hours in the refrigerator in a closed baby food jar.
- 2 months in the freezer.
FAQ
At what age can you give prunes to baby?
Prunes can be offered from 4 months, as soon as baby is eating smooth purées or compotes. Always start with very small amounts, finely blended with a fruit such as apple, pear, or peach.
Are prunes safe for baby?
Yes, as long as they are well blended (with no skin or pieces) and unsweetened. Avoid whole dried prunes before age 3 because of the choking risk. Choose plain prunes, with no additives or preservatives.
Does apple and prune compote really help with constipation?
Yes. Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, which help retain water in the intestines and stimulate transit. It’s a very gentle natural remedy, perfect for helping regulate baby’s digestion without medication.
Can you add other fruits?
Yes! You can vary it with:
Pear–prune, very gentle and smooth.
Apple–banana–prune, more filling.
Apple–apricot–prune, for a slightly tangier flavor.
Always with no added sugar!
Should you add sugar?
No, this compote is naturally sweet thanks to the fruit. Avoid all added sugar before age 2.
Can you give this apple-prune compote in the evening?
Yes, but preferably in small amounts, because prunes can speed up digestion. If baby already has fast transit, it’s better to offer it in the morning or at snack time.
