Looking for a super simple, quick, and especially ultra soft snack for baby? These mini applesauce cakes are every parent’s favorite little trick: the applesauce naturally adds sweetness without extra sugar, creates a wonderfully soft texture, and makes easy-to-grab little cakes… without spending 3 hours in the kitchen.
This is exactly the kind of recipe I love making for my girls: applesauce, one egg, a little flour… and just like that, you get a homemade snack that works just as well for adults too (the kind where you “grab one with your coffee”
The best part: these cakes are completely dairy-free, making them perfect for the many babies who unfortunately have dairy intolerance or allergies.
And another huge advantage: you can customize them endlessly depending on what you have on hand (apple, pear, apricot, banana…), or according to the season. Also perfect when you have an open jar of applesauce to finish 😉
Ingredients (makes about 6 mini cakes)
- 2/3 cup flour (75 g)
- 2 level teaspoons baking soda (or baking powder)
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1/3 cup applesauce (90 g) (not too runny)
- optional for older children: 1 tablespoon agave syrup
Instructions (super easy)
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) (convection setting if possible).
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg + applesauce + oil until smooth.

Add the flour and baking soda, then mix just until combined so no flour remains visible.

Check the texture: the batter should be soft, like thick muffin batter.
Divide the batter into mini muffin or mini loaf silicone molds (I love the mini loaf pans I’ve been using for years!) or lightly greased molds, filling them about 2/3 full.

Bake for about 12 minutes (depending on the molds and oven).
Check for doneness: a knife inserted in the center should come out almost clean.
Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes before removing from the molds.
Enjoy, baby! 🙂
Why it’s great for baby (and for you)
- Soft texture: the applesauce makes the cakes moist and tender, perfect for little hands.
- Naturally sweet flavor: perfect for a simple snack without added sugar.
- Practical recipe: basic ingredients, quick prep and baking, and they store really well!
- Easy to customize: just swap the applesauce flavor and you get a brand-new version 😉

Storage
- At room temperature: 24 hours in an airtight container.
- In the refrigerator: 3 days in a sealed container. (They stay soft.)
- Freezing: yes, up to 2 months.
- I recommend freezing them flat on a tray first before transferring to a bag.
- To thaw: a few hours in the fridge or 1 hour at room temperature.
FAQ
At what age can babies eat these applesauce cakes?
Generally, they can be offered from 10 months old, since they’re considered a “snack/cake” format and it also depends on each family’s habits.
What kind of applesauce should I use?
Ideally, use unsweetened applesauce. Apple and pear are the easiest flavors to start with. Apricot, peach, plum… also work well (just watch out for very runny applesauce, which will change the cake texture and may require adding more flour).
The batter is too runny / too thick — what should I do?
Too runny: add 1 to 2 tablespoons flour.
Too thick: add 1 tablespoon water.
Can I replace the baking soda?
Yes: use baking powder instead (same quantity). Both work well.
How can I prevent the cakes from sticking to the molds?
Silicone molds usually work perfectly. Otherwise, lightly brush with oil or use mini paper liners.
Can I make these cakes in a large cake pan?
Yes: use a loaf pan or cake pan, but the baking time will be longer (around 30–40 minutes depending on the pan and oven). Test with a knife — it should come out clean when inserted into the center.
