Today, we’re making a simple little broccoli, potato, and ham purée for baby, with no added salt and a small tip for gently introducing texture: you can either blend the ham with the vegetables, or finely grind it and sprinkle it on top of the purée. My mom used to serve me finely ground ham in some of my meals when I was little, and I loved that texture!
Broccoli is a really interesting green vegetable for baby: it is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Paired with potato, it makes a milder purée with just the right amount of starch. We add a small amount of ham for protein, always with no added salt and ideally nitrate-free.
With these quantities, you’ll get about 7 oz of purée (200 g), which is 1 generous portion or 2 smaller portions depending on baby’s age and appetite.
Ingredients
How to Make Broccoli, Potato, and Ham Purée
Prepare the vegetables
Rinse the broccoli florets.
Peel the potato, rinse it, then cut it into small pieces/slices so it cooks quickly.
Cook the broccoli and potato
Steam the potato and broccoli for 10 minutes. Let them cook until the vegetables are very soft: the tip of a knife should slide in easily.
Add the ham
Finely grind the ham using a small food processor.
Blend the purée
Place the broccoli, potato, and ham (if you want to blend it directly with the vegetables) in the blender.

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of cooking water to start.
Blend until you get a very smooth purée. If the purée is too thick, add a little more cooking water, gradually.
Add the fat
When the purée is ready and has cooled slightly, add:
- 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil (canola, for example), or a little butter for older babies.
Mix well to evenly distribute the fat.
Adjust the texture to baby’s age
For a 6-month-old baby, keep the texture very smooth.
For an older baby, you can:
- blend a little less,
- or mash the purée with a fork to keep a few small, soft pieces.
Bon appétit, baby!
Storage
- In the refrigerator:
You can store this purée for 24 hours in the fridge, in a suitable airtight container.
Reheat gently at mealtime, stirring well and always checking the temperature before serving. - In the freezer:
You can freeze this purée in small jars or ice cube trays for about 1 month.
Thaw in the refrigerator, then reheat gently before offering it to baby.
Frequently Asked Questions
From what age can I offer this purée to baby?
In general, you can offer this purée from 6 months, once baby has already tried several vegetables and potato. Always adapt the texture to baby’s stage: very smooth at first, then more mashed as baby progresses.
How much ham should I offer baby?
Common guidelines for animal proteins (meat / fish / ham) are about:
1/3 oz per day (10 g) around 6–8 months,
1/2 to 3/4 oz (15 g to 20 g) around 9–12 months,
3/4 to 1 oz (20 g to 25 g) after 1 year.
Here, I use 1/3 oz ham (10 g) for about 7 oz of purée (200 g). Then adjust the quantities according to baby’s age, what baby eats, and your pediatrician’s advice.
Is it better to blend the ham into the purée or leave it on top?
Both options work!
Blending the ham with the purée gives a completely uniform texture, which can feel reassuring at the beginning.
Finely ground ham sprinkled on top, as in my recipe, makes it possible to introduce very tiny textures on a very smooth purée base. It is a nice gentle step to help prepare baby for soft pieces.
You can start by blending everything, then, when baby seems more comfortable, move on to the version with ham on top.
Baby refuses broccoli. What can I do?
It is very common for babies to be a little wary of green vegetables, especially at first. A few ideas:
Offer very small amounts of broccoli mixed with a vegetable baby already likes (potato, carrot, sweet potato, etc.).
Offer broccoli purée again several times without forcing: refusing it one day does not mean baby will never like it!
Keep the texture very smooth at first, then gradually increase the tiny textures when baby is ready.
You can also rotate with other recipes that include broccoli to add variety (soups, gratins, etc., for older babies).
